Where’s George?
A web site with a gigantic data base that has attracted nearly 7 million registered users who have entered the serial numbers of more than 209 million bills (mostly $1 bills — you know, the ones with George Washington’s portrait on them). The result: a system that will track where that money has been, and how long it took to travel there. Interesting factoid: those 209 million bills being tracked are only a bit over 0.1 percent of all American bills in circulation. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing makes 29 million more, with a value of $907 million, every day! (And a significant number are destroyed....)
Whenever someone buys Get Out of Hell Free cards and stamps or writes “www.WheresGeorge.com” on the bills, I enter them on the site too. It’s fun to get the follow-up e-mails so I can see where they end up next.
There’s a similar site to track Euros, EuroBillTracker.
