This Great Game

The reader who suggested this site says it's "a great site for those of us who love baseball and the history behind it. It offers baseball historical information by year, decade, and team. It is a great way to waste, er, I mean, use time to discover new baseball factoids." Recently I read an item by conservative pundit George Will (who is a total baseball nut) which explained why baseball is "America's Pastime": because you don't have to be superhuman to play the game. "Players do not need to be seven feet tall or seven feet wide," Will wrote. "Last year's World Series MVP, the Cardinals' David Eckstein, is 5 feet 7 and 165 pounds." My kind of game.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game
by Michael Lewis
Amazon Price: $10.04
Customer Review: A brilliant book. It talks about sport in it's widest application - which to my mind is the only reason we truly love sport. Billy Beane clearly is a maniac, but he just makes the other GM's of Baseball teams appear certifiably insane. How do you jus...

The Baseball Codes: Beanballs, Sign Stealing, and Bench-Clearing Brawls: The ...
by Jason Turbow, Michael Duca
Amazon Price: $16.50
Customer Review: This is the kind of book that you hope will be more than it ultimately is, but is really as good as it can be. "Baseball Codes" ends up being a laundry list of baseball's "unwritten rules". What you hope "Codes" will be is a magical portal onto a maj...

Steinbrenner: The Last Lion of Baseball
by Bill Madden
Amazon Price: $17.81
Customer Review: Having been a Yankee fan going back to the CBS days, this book was definately a trip down memory lane. Maddon was lucky to get copies of Gabe Paul's taped memoirs post-mortem to document a lot of the back scenes details of Steinbrenner's years from ...
