One of the oldest (started in 1971) public service efforts on the Internet (and, sadly, one of the most ignored), Project Gutenberg volunteers create e-books out of classic, out-of-copyright books to keep their ideas alive. More than 13,000 e-books are available through the site, all for free, and hundreds more are added each month. Not just in English, either. There are even audio books!
