James Randi Educational Foundation

James “The Amazing” Randi is a well known magician who got sick and tired of con artists using basic, and at times laughably simplistic, stage magic to convince people they had some special “gift”. He formed JREF as “an educational resource on the paranormal, pseudoscientific and the supernatural” to help people understand that what is usually touted as “paranormal” is really quite easy to explain. Randi goes so far as to offer a million-dollar reward “to anyone who can show, under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event.” I’ve met Randi; he says the typical response to his challenge is “I wouldn’t contaminate my God-given talent by taking money!” OK, he responds: he’ll pay the money to any charity they designate — say, an organization that feeds starving children? “God wouldn’t have a problem with that, would He?” So far, his million dollars, put up by sponsors of his foundation, remains unclaimed. But his site is much more than the challenge: there’s all sorts of thought-provoking commentary, forums and more.
