Campaign for Real Beauty

Modern advertising is coloring our sense of beauty: it's a tall, emaciated model with doe eyes and long straight hair, right? That's the message young girls are getting, and it's not just wrong, it's destructive. Sponsored by Dove soap (the beauty bar, don'tcha know!), the Campaign has a healthier message: beauty comes from within, and girls need to learn that they don't have to live up to an impossible ideal -- which frankly ain't all that ideal anyway. If this site has a weakness, it's that it needs to address boys, too. One step at a time, I guess.

List Price: $13.00
Amazon Price: $10.40
Editorial Review:
Editor Tonya Bolden makes no bones about it: "It's no secret. This book is about girl build-up." Accordingly, the pieces collected in 33 Things Every Girl Should Know have the spicy flavor of rabble-rousing. But instead of a radical call to arms, readers will find more of a call to self-esteem, self-respect, and a summons to keep their eyes on a bright future. Subtitled "Stories, Songs, Poems, and Smart Talk by 33 Extraordinary Women," this collection offers young women first-hand advice from such diverse luminaries as Lynda Barry, Sandra Cisneros, Johnetta Cole, Alice Hoffman, Lauren Hutton, M. E. Kerr, Rebecca Lobo, Natalie Merchant, Faith Ringgold, Tabitha Soren, Vera Wang, Wendy Wasserstein, and Sigourney Weaver. These grown-up girls hearken from many realms and backgrounds, with widely varying experiences and skills, but all join their voices here to offer insight, advice, and a surprising expanse of common ground.

From a fiercely funny comic strip about mean girls, to a moving essay about living with spina bifida, to a forensic discussion of why it's not a crime for girls to love science, these stories reflect and encourage female wit, wisdom, and perseverance. Most of all, the essential 33 things display the infinite range of options for girls, and will inspire young women to pursue the pathways paving their dreams.Natalie Merchant. Sigourney Weaver. Tabitha Soren. Wendy Wasserstein. Rebecca Lobo. Lauren Hutton. Anita Roddick. Lynda Barry. These are among the thirty-three extraordinary women who lend their diverse voices to this outstanding collection of stories, songs, poems, comics, and essays that will give every adolescent girl reason to feel hopeful about making the transition from girlhood to womanhood. Dealing with subjects like popularity, success, communication with boys, speaking one's mind, and body image, here is a book that offers help and inspiration to girls as they struggle to find a portrayal of womanhood they can call their own. 33 Things Every Girl Should Know is an empowering and inspirational gift book that every girl will want to own, to share with friends, and to use as a springboard to self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and self-esteem.

200 Ways to Raise a Girl's Self-Esteem: An Indespensable Guide for Parents, T...
By: Will Glennon
List Price: $16.95
Amazon Price: $11.53
Editorial Review:
Studies show that young girls often develop faster than their male counterparts, grasping concepts such as math and sports just as easily -- until they reach early adolescence. Then, girls quickly fall behind boys, victims to society's confusing dictates of what being female means. According to parenting expert Will Glennon, reinforcing a young girl's self-esteem through carefully considered "boosters" is the key to helping girls hold their own in the world. This guide helps parents and teachers understand the subtle difference between "boosters" and "busters." For example, complimenting a young woman on her appearance may give her the idea that she is valued only for her looks. In 200 Ways to Raise a Girl's Self-Esteem, readers will find ways to impart a strong sense of self-worth to girls in everyday situations.

If all the world’s a stage, Andrea Anderson is sitting in the audience. High school has its predictable heroes, heroines, villains, and plotlines, and Andrea has no problem guessing how each drama will turn out. She is, after all, a professional spectator. In the social hierarchy she is a Nothing, and at home her mother runs the show. All Andrea has to do is show up every day and life basically plays out as scripted.
Then one day Andrea accepts a job. Honora Menapace–a reclusive neighbor–is sick. As in every other aspect of her life, Andrea’s role is clear: Honora’s garden must be taken care of and her pottery finished, and someone needs to feed her dog, Zena. But what starts out as a simple job yanks Andrea’s back-row seat out from under her. Life is no longer predictable, and nothing is what it seems. Light is dark, villains are heroes, and what she once saw as ugly is too beautiful for words. Andrea must face the fact that life at first glance doesn’t even crack the surface.
